March 2016 – Intimate Requests

Originally the plan was to have the month off as Stu had an operation on his nose and was advised he’d need time to recover. One week later and Stu was feeling fine and completely bored so ‘Intimate Requests’ was the order of the day.

Since moving to the Ex-Services, comments had been made that UKE NIGHT was not as intimate as it used to be back in the Courthouse Hotel. So the band set up on the floor at the front of the stage and used a smaller vocal PA. The Ukers could hear themselves, like the Tumbulgum Uke Nights of old.

We also put the entire Uke Mullum song list online for the month so people could request their favourite songs, and if they chose, could lead them. Stu also did up 5 new charts for songs that were not in the list of nearly 1000 tunes. Neil McInnes, Graham Richardson, Erina Leech, Bettina and Melissa (The Moyle Sisters), Tone Uke, Almer Asha and Val Hodgson got up and slayed ’em. All very different moods and styles with great performances all round and cheered on by the supportive crowd.

The Band Comprised Mr Rod Coe on Double Bass, Warren Earl on guitar and Steel, Evan Sun on Mandolin and Guitar and percussion. We also had Clelia Adams smashing 5 tunes and a visit from Kathryn Jones plus our UKE NIGHT darling Misty Henderson (with Young Safron) who at the time of writing this is headed to Italy as part of the Mullum high school exchange program.

Thanks to all who came along, Deb on the Door and a special thanks to Luke from the Mullum Ex-Services Club who helped out with the TV monitor. It was a great format and will definitely be happening again.

Feb 2016 – Hawaiian Night

Wow. The room looked wonderful thanks to the efforts of Miss Amber and Lilith from Mana Aloha Hula Dancers (Byron Bay) with floral table settings and Palm Fronds adorning the stage. It was the biggest crowd we have had since we moved to the Ex-Services with folk traveling down from the Gold Coast and even international visitors from as far away as Argentina.

The band sounded wonderful with Paul Agar on Lap and Pedal steel, Rod Coe on the U-Bass and BV’s and Rex Carter on Drums. The dancers were so beautiful and all went off without a hitch with the musical arrangements (well almost). Beautiful singing with 3 part harmonies from Misty Henderson, Parrisa Bouas and Miss Amber. Terry Flatly made a surprise appearance on ‘Hula Girl’ and the members of the NRUO even got up unannounced on the dance floor to wiggle their hips.

Val Hodgson won the poster for a second time in a row (for the second time in a row). Best dressed male was Graham, Best dressed female was Leander and overall best dressed who took home the Lanikai ukulele was Leilani (who as it turns out lived next door to terry Flatly in the Lismore in the 60’s, now resides between Main Arm and Hawaii, she also supplied most of the beautiful Hawaiian dresses on display). Our aim was to show all who attended what an amazing place we live in. The aloha spirit was in the room and everyone left with a big smile on their face.

Jan 2016 – Pub Rock

This was so much fun. We realised the audience was drowned out by the loud monster stage sound we had, though that’s the only way to play Pub Rock with guitarist Tim Longworth, drums by Jason Caspen (who lived these songs) and Rod Coe on fender precision bass plus newcomer Zane on Sax who featured brightly in Men At Works ‘Who Can It Be Now’ and The Models ‘Barbados’. The set list was full of favourite moments from Countdown… ‘Unguarded Moment’ by the Church, ‘Happy Man’ by Sunnyboys, ‘Don’t Change’ by INXS to name a small selection.

Miss Amber did a great Jimmy Barnes for ‘Forever Now’ completely ripped as Chrissie Amphlett in ‘Boys in Town’ and pulled off a very convincing Continental Robert for ‘Soul Kinda Feelin’ then did great backing vocals all evening.

For the third year in a row Sara Tindley and Ash Bell were back to lead some big tunes. And lead they did, Ash always delivers and his versions of two Hunters and Collectors tunes were mighty as was his The Angel’s ‘No Secrets’, Aussie Crawl’s ‘Boys Light Up’ and Dragons ‘April Sun In Cuba’.

We won’t mention the technical glitch we had with ‘Girls On The Avenue’… (for the first time in a very long time this song fell into ruin) though some nice free form vocals came out of that miss hap while Stu struggled to download the chart in the correct Key.

After so many big moments the audience was mouth agape to see Sara Tindley absolutely rock out on ‘Long Way To The Top’. Bon Scott would have been proud. Then we ‘Threw Our Arms’ around each other and it was time go home. It was like going back in time. Probably not the Ukes greatest moment in terms of anyone being heard though Lot’s of smiles at the end of the night and a great way to celebrate Australian Music.

Christmas Uke-Tacular 2015

Christmas Uke Tacular 2015

Another very smiley and wonderful evening. The set list was the most fun we’ve ever had with a Christmas show with songs like ‘Christmas in Jail’, ‘Trim Your Tree’ and ‘Boogie Woogie Santa Claus’. Daughter Rosie sang her old standard – ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ (wouldn’t be Christmas without it). Right up until the last week I had no idea Clelia Adams and Kathryn Jones were even in town. What a surprise it was to have the Tinsel Tones back together again for their 3 part harmony versions of ‘Christmas Island’ and ‘Mele Kalikimaka’.

We had new comer Lily Loy from the sandwich shop round the corner join us for her first ever time singing on stage. She has an amazing quality to her voice and blew everyone away with her songs.

That Mae Wilde always brings spontaneity, sass and a wicked sense of humour. Her tune – CW Stoneking’s ‘On A Christmas Day’ was magic, followed by a limbo competition (I want to See Santa Do The Mambo) then the seemingly naughty ‘I Know Just What You Want For Christmas’.We love you Mae. Later Ilona Harker joined us on stage as well and boy do we love her.

Highlight of the evening for me was Steve Passfield practically unannounced showed up as Santa handed out chocolates and made my dream come true of launching into a beautiful version of ‘White Christmas’ complete with a very pretty and flawless solo. Rounded up nicely with the punkabilly ‘Sleigh Bell Rock’ which we played twice it was so much fun then Chuck Berry’s ‘Run Rudolph Run’. Big Christmas Thanks to Rod Coe on Bass and Rex Carter on Drums with Deb on the door and Luis Christia on sound.

November – The Favs from 2015

It was a very eclectic song list with two songs from each month apart from the Stones book … (we had three of those). After a brilliant 2015 Mullum Music Festival we were all a bit buggered. It was a great night none the less and everyone had a hoot. Stand outs were Misty Henderson (as always) and again Erina Leech has proven to be a strong and grounded singer, always on key and delivered another great version of ‘Young Folk’ with son Reuben doing a great whistle part. It was great to have the teachers and family of Coorabell school in attendance on the evening. Evan Landers delivered a great version of Copperhead Road. The venue is really feeling like home now. Thanks Luke and Michael from the club and as always Deb and Luis. Now… ready for the 5th annual Christmas Uke-tacular.

August 2015 – New Venue Debut

Uke Mullum August 2015

It was the first show in the Club Mullum, the new home of Uke Mullum – Miss Amber and Stukulele’s UKE NIGHT. We were nervous about how the room would be received by the fans and Uke players as it is an auditorium… not a pub and requires a different awareness I suppose. All in all the reception was positive.

We put put together a set full of songs that are quintessential to the uke with a bunch of old Hapa-Haole tunes and finishing off with some great Pop tunes. We had Paul Agar on Lap steel (and Pedal Steel and guitar) who adds so much, Acey Jason Caspen on drums and Rod Coe on basses who went the hard yards as usual with the arrangements. Guest Vocalist Misty Henderson and Renee Searles were both wonderful and Miss Amber did a fine job with her tunes. The N.R.U.O. were just perfect for the night adding their big orchestra sound and look to 7 of the tunes in the 2nd set. Nice to see lots of familiar face in the audience like Micheal Smith from the now somewhat scaled down Gold Coast ukuleles.

We are learning as we go in terms of setting up the room. Folk wanted a little more intimacy was the general consensus, though we needed room at the front of the stage for Lilith and Marion from The Mana Aloha Hula Dance Troupe who brought the spirit of Aloha to to our little night and we are forever to grateful to be graced by their beautiful dance.

Most of all thanks to all you wonderful ukers who came to support the night… it would mean nothing with out you and the plan is to make the evening more inclusive of everyone with more local group and solo performances. Thanks to Luke Barnes from The Ex-Services and Luis Christia and Deb who pulled out all stops to make the night a success. Looking forward to the next one in Club Mullum. June 2015 – Name Your Poison

I must have bogarted the joint a little too much last night. I forgot to thank everyone at the end of the 2nd set, which is the best part. Massive thanks to special guests Clelia Adams, Ash Bell and Parissa Bouass who were all fantastic. (Miss Amber and I aspire to be great singers like these guys one day)… Thanks to The Courthouse and the restaurant and thanks to Luis Christia for excellent sound and Deb on the door. Congrats to Donald who took out the raffle (free entry and free meals for two next month + a bottle of wine) and to Erina who won the framed poster (2nd time in a row). Thanks to Lyn from Niche Pics who got to take a few pics before her camera malfunctioned. Rod and Rex the silver haired rhythm section were amazing as usual and special thanks to Rex for charting out the entire drum part for Cheap Wine. (that’s dedication). Although the numbers were down compared to the rest of the year, it was a fun and entertaining evening and we had some new happy faces in the crowd. Mostly, thanks to all of you who made it and joined in the fun. See you next month for our 4th Birthday.

 

Beatles Uke Night – Repeat Performance

Betles Night Repeat Performance

 

Amazingly, we had a great turn out and most of the audience were newbies… (they didn’t come to the first night). The band were on fire with the luxury of having performed the songs once before. Fiona Knight again rocked the house… she found her special growl that she doesn’t know how to reproduce in any other circumstance other than singing ‘Twist and Shout’.

Clelia Adams came along and sang harmonies and lead on ‘Yesterday’…. It was a show stopper. Guy Kaychel and Raku O’Gaia again excelled and most notably was the applause Evan Sun received for his solo in ‘Something’. We even pulled out ‘Birthday’ for an audience member who was celebrating his birthday, (Happy Birthday Mason!)…

A great night and well worth repeating. As one of the happy throng commented.. “It was gear!”
